En Grisaille
October- November, 2025

Galerie Devals
37–38 Galerie de Montpensier
Palais-Royal, Paris

Next week marks the final opportunity to visit En Grisaille at Galerie Devals, on view through November 22, 2025. Presented in the historic setting of the Palais-Royal, the exhibition brings together works by Susanna Fritscher, James Howell, Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, and Hiroshi Sugimoto artists who each engage the language of grey through distinct formal and conceptual approaches.

Within this dialogue, James Howell’s work continues his long investigation into tonal structure and perceptual transition. For more than five decades, Howell examined the subtle shifts within grey as both a chromatic and philosophical field. His disciplined modulation of tone at once systematic and intuitive positions grey not as absence, but as a site of infinite variation and perceptual depth. In En Grisaille, Howell’s paintings resonate alongside parallel explorations of light, structure, repetition, and atmospheric nuance.

The exhibition underscores the enduring relevance of grey as a conceptual framework one that traverses Minimalism, conceptual art, photography, and perceptual abstraction. Howell’s presence in this context affirms the centrality of his inquiry within broader conversations about seriality, visual logic, and the poetics of restraint.

The James Howell Foundation extends its gratitude to Galerie Devals and Galerie Bigaignon for including Howell’s work in this presentation and for the installation photography documenting the exhibition.
