“Thoughts of Infinity” was presented at the ARCA International Film Festival, an international platform dedicated to exploring and promoting the connections between cinema and the arts. Conceived as a research project, exhibition space, and educational program, ARCA brings together a broad audience and highlights the quality and diversity of global film production related to the arts. The festival is a founding member of the Films on Art Network, an international alliance of twelve festivals across North America, South America, Asia, and Europe committed to fostering collaboration and exchange in service of the arts.
The documentary enters the universe of the artist James Howell, whose body of work more than four hundred pieces dedicated to variations of grey explores the “in-between,” that space where opposites dissolve and subtlety emerges. From his studio in New York to the luminous horizons of Montauk and the quiet expanses of San Juan Island, the film follows a search that weaves together philosophy, physics, and nature.
With the sensitivity characteristic of director Halina Dyrschka, the film unfolds as an intimate portrait of a creator who found in minimal tonal transitions a way of thinking and seeing the world. Through measured pacing and contemplative imagery, Thoughts of Infinity reflects the very principles that guided Howell’s practice: discipline, perception, and attentiveness to nuance.
